AlphaIndiaRomeo got a reaction from sparks_smudge in EDITORIAL: Why I will not buy TerraMaxx Seasons Package
    Hi all!
I spent the better part of the day wondering whether or not I would write this op-ed, and spent the best part of my day wondering about all the reasons why TerraMaxx's new piece of software is not the way things should be.
I think the biggest reason behind my rationale is that winter textures in a flight simulator such as X-Plane 11 shouldn't come from a third-party add-on company. This feature should have been included a long time ago in X-Plane and we can only blame Laminar Research for this. However, I'm hopeful that this will be included in a future release of X-Plane. In the time being, anything that comes from a third-party add-on company such as TerraMaxx is a patch for a problem that is bigger than them. It is a quick fix to a problem that needs more attention to details... Which brings me to my second point...
The pictures look amazing, well... sorta. The textures themselves don't feel natural. It's a layer that is applied on top of the whole world where snow should be seen during winter. Let's just say the pictures are very impressive as we never had snow in X-Plane before. But we already had snow in X-Plane before, freeware patches - again, patches. The novelty in this add-on is the fact that textures will auto-change with seasons and from one place to another. What happens is that mid-flight, your textures will re-load as many times as you cross that imaginary line where TerraMaxx feels there should be snow. This doesn't feel natural, this is not how things should be in a simulator like X-Plane! We shouldn't have to buy seasons... Seasons should be a natural occurrence in the sim and should come from Laminar Research and enhance, yes, if needs would arise from there.
But that, that's my two cents and I don't hold any grudge for the 99.9% of you's who will make that purchase, after all, that's a good fix for now.

AlphaIndiaRomeo reacted to angeli662 in PKSIM – SAN ANDRES & PROVIDENCIA RELEASED
Just when you thought Colombia was getting enough third-party love, along comes PKSIM with not one, but two new Colombian airports.
I’m buying this new release today, because PKSIM has been getting better with each new release.
    Features
2 airports included SKSP and SKPV. Full photo-real islands of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina. Custom 19m mesh for the 3 islands. Far aways Albuquerque and Bolivar reefs included. Custom autogen. Custom ground textures with reflections. Ctrl+J gates for SKSP. Custom high resolution textures. Dynamic Lighting (P3Dv4) Airport configurator. Both versions included P3D v3 & v4. Some facts about the location:
Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, or colloquially San Andrés y Providencia, is one of the departments of Colombia. It consists of two island groups about 775 km (482 mi) northwest of mainland Colombia, and eight outlying banks and reefs. The largest island of the archipelago is called San Andrés and its capital is San Andrés.
San Andrés is the largest island full of resorts and a famous touristic destination arriving by plane into the Gustavo Rojas Pinilla (SKSP) airport located to the north of the island where airlines like Avianca, Latam, Wingo, Viva Colombia, Satena and Copa Airlines have regular flights and seasonal flights from numerous international airlines.
Providencia Island, also known as New Providence, located to the north of San Andrés, is a small mountain island which contains 90% of Colombian reefs. It has a small island next to it called Santa Catalina. Green Tourists arrive from San Andrés via ferry of by small planes to the “El Embrujo” airport located to the east of the island between hills.

Size 24.6 MB  Created 24-11-2017 16:09:53  Changed 24-11-2017 18:52:28  License Freeware   Auto-install : Installer Scenery v11  Author : Gilles Boily Download For FSX & Steam Edition & P3D v1 v2 v3 v4             This most realistic scenery by its exceptional level of detail is the third edition of the Jean Lesage International Airport of Quebec (CYQB) version FSX (also works with P3D). The present scenery includes more than fifty buildings and objects including the newly inaugurated terminal and annex. The Québec City Airport is the base for the operation and maintenance of the CL215 and CL415 tanker fleet of the Quebec Government Air Service. This scenery, which required hundreds of hours of work, was made from a very complete photographic documentation, which aims to be more in line with reality.

AlphaIndiaRomeo got a reaction from PilotPete in How to Create FS / X-Plane Sceneries?
    Hi Pete,
Wow... thank you very much! I'm short of words to thank you for the detailed response. I will definitely look into each and every suggestions you made. They are all clear an concise steps.
Given that I already pulled out the Google satellite imagery for the airport I'm working on, and given that quality of the imagery is somewhat decent, I will work with that for starters and go from there. I do have the desire to create taxiways, the apron, and even roads on top of the imagery and so if it's a little less detailed than what I would get by paying a lot of money, that's fine for me.
I think it's also a good step to make sure I can follow through with making the scenery altogether. If I can make something up to my standards of liking, then I will definitely go ahead and purchase the better imagery, re-work the scenery, and sell it. For now, I will concentrate on making a freeware version as practice.
Again, thank you so much for your help. It definitely is a strong motivator and good luck to you as well. I will go ahead and work with your tips over the weekend.
    Kind regards,
    Frederick

AlphaIndiaRomeo reacted to PilotPete in How to Create FS / X-Plane Sceneries?
    Hi!
    1. No. You have to buy commercial Satellite images. also you wouldnt want to use Google image data cause of the too low resolution.
Look out for professional high resolution data providers. You can also get vector and mesh data for surrounding area but as said, it costs quite a bit.
Im doing some improvements for small airports in my area and in this case i buy the satellite image data that covers 3 airfields so i can get the most benefit out of it.

    2. I use Sbuilder only to get the fast and dirty satellite image and export the image. Sbuilder is outdated and there are better tools like ADE which is FREE and MASSIVE in its features. Also payware devs use ADE (http://www.scruffyduck.org/airport-design-editor/4584106799)

    3. Its very likely that they also use ADE but of course they add custom ground poly for the texturing of taxiways, apron, runway, taxilines etc...
But basically, yes. Photoshop, 3ds MAX and ADE and of course quality commercial satellite images.

    Start like this:
Get your satellite out of Sbuilder, export it and ad it to ADE, then do your work in ADE with P3D stock library to see how everything works. After that try to make custom ground polys etc. and get deeper in it. After that you surely want do create custom 3D objects for your Airport buildings, tower, etc. so learn to work with 3ds MAX.
Later on you can have a look how to create Landclass, Autogen, etc...

Youll see very fast, trying to make Payware scenery alone will eat up your whole freetime for months...
Also check youtube, so many tutorials around to get familiar with those tools. For further questions just ask. Im also starting to make my first scenery and its not easy but i have a bit of support from a payware dev that can guide me in the right direction if i fail completely. But i try to learn everything on my own and that is the only way you`ll make it further. But im here for some starter help

AlphaIndiaRomeo got a reaction from smurf_john in FSDG releases Mayotte Intl.
    Hi all,
Very good news for African flyers! FSDG has you covered with this new release for Mayotte Intl. Go take a look at the picture via the link below, it's definitely worth it! I always admired FSDG for their talent, the pace at which they release as well as their aim at targeting African sceneries and sceneries that are needed and that nobody did before.
Question remains... will there be a Madagascar scenery anytime soon? The default one is almost unusable given mountains on either side which renders ILS approaches impossible. According to some exchanges I had with the developer over at Facebook, there is a new terminal being built and it won't be finished until 2020. The developer will then, maybe, take a look at the last big island of the Indian Ocean.

AlphaIndiaRomeo got a reaction from OMGEDSON in Pacsim - Salt Lake City for V4 - REVIEW
    Hi all!
Just thought I would take some time to review - quick and dirty review - one of my most recent purchase: Pacsim Salt Lake City for P3Dv4.
I was eyeing this scenery for quite a while now as it is one of Delta's hub and I fly Delta a lot on Prepar3D. The city is a nice hop from San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vegas, Denver and Phoenix yet my first flight into Salt Lake City was from Atlanta, a little over 4hrs drive.
Now, the scenery installation process is really simple! Once the payment is made, you receive an email with the serial number as well as the .exe file. For the installation, you also need to have three other .bin files available from their website.
The scenery is beautiful and the approach with the downtown part that has been modeled really creates a sweet ambiance. The modelling of the surrounding mountains also attracts the attention. Performance wise, I have a fairly good, average system and had 50FPS on downwind, down to 30FPS on final and in around the apron. For me, performance was slightly better than what I have in Minneapolis (FlightBeam) and Paris (Taxi2Gate)
    Positives:
Good performance; Good modelling of the surrounding mountains; Beautiful modelling of the terminals; Downtown is very well modeled; Inside of terminal is modeled! There were, however, some downsides...
    Downsides:
Clear demarcation of scenery textures on the outskirt of the scenery coverage (see picture below) Markings on the ground (font used for the taxi-in lines) Gates could have used more weathering! No dynamic lighting; Weird bushes around the runways; The scenery as a whole just feels like it was rushed through completion. You can see in this picture the airport and downtown on downwind for runway 16L.

The clear demarcation between the snow textures and the Flight Sim default (ORBX) textures... Look near the lagoon at the top right of the windshield, it's ugly!

You can see the bushes on the left side of the threshold which is very unfortunate as it isn't realistic... Also look right of the runway... it is supposed to be grass inbetween the runway and the apron but it shows as a dark dark concrete texture which we're not too sure if it's dark grass or not. From far away, it looks like the texture that is supposed to go there never loaded.

The B13 signs is a little jagged, as the R of 34R and 16R markings on the runway.

Look at the font used for the aircraft parking spots! It looks like a popular Times New Roman font... I'm not sure this is the real font used in real life!

Overview of the airport (very empty without AI traffic!) I felt lonely!

You can see the downtown in the background, the famous bushes in and around the taxiways and finally, one of the reason that lead me to believe that they rush through making the scenery: look at the taxiway near runway 14, the tarmac textures switch seems odd to me...

In conclusion, for $28USD (including 20% off) I would have expected more quality. I feel like the scenery was rushed through completion and is short of what would have been an amazing scenery. $28USD is the price for an amazing ORBX/FlightBeam scenery but I just cannot seem to find that the overall quality of this scenery equates what I could have for the same price with other scenery makers. I find that it is a hefty price for what it is but I'm still happy with my purchase and would recommend. After all, this is the only scenery available for Salt Lake City.
Note that after exchanging emails with Graham, they are planning to do an updated version of the scenery that will reflect all the renovations they are doing at this airport at the moment. He said that it should be coming around end of 2018 and this one would probably include dynamic lighting. In this version, however, he said that dynamic lighting would affect performance too much and that's why it's not in.
