X-Plane 11 in Vulkan & Metal: First Images From Inside the Simulator
By: Alex John April 27, 2019         Laminar Research has announced that the X-Plane 11 world now runs in the Vulkan and Metal environments. This comes after their last update about a month ago, where the team confirmed the main simulator ran up to the main menu, and that Plane Maker and Airfoil maker run well in the Vulkan and Metal APIs.
Today's post on their developer blog sees X-Plane 11 visibly running in the Vulkan and Metal environments. These differ from the current rendering engine, OpenGL, by running more efficiently and requiring less resources, thereby theoretically improving performance. Vulkan is designed to run on Windows, whilst Metal will only run on Mac devices.
It is important to note that the previews show numerous bugs and problems, some of which are caused intentionally by turning things off, whilst others need to be fixed. Nonetheless, it shows Laminar Research are progressing with the upgrade to the new rendering APIs. The screenshots below show the main menu in various states:
Ben Supnik provided a list of things that are currently working:
Plugins are bypassed right now. We have not yet written the plugin-OpenGL-interop layer. VR only works when using OpenGL as the driver; we need to write some new VR code to pass Metal and Vulkan frames directly to the OVR and Rift APIs. Screenshots/Movie capture are a work in progress – that’s what I’ve been working on this week. ... And went on to state:
"We still have a number of visual bugs, so screenshots are an important feature so we can run our automated test system. The test system takes hundreds of screenshots of the sim in many configurations and compares them to 11.30 to catch bugs introduced by the new Vulkan and Metal back-ends. Clearly I’ll have to fix my color problems first.
"One fun aspect of this port: Metal and Vulkan copy Direct3D’s convention where the viewport Y axis points down and not up. This resulted in a whole series of weird “it’s upside-down again” bugs, most of which have been fixed."
"The world is drawn correctly but the atmosphere around it is upside down." The goal now is to fix a number of bugs, primarily those "that bring the whole machine down." Supnik also posted a couple of other screenshots of "things that have gone wrong during development":
Again, these are some early images of X-Plane running in Vulkan and Metal and are (extremely) unlikely to represent the final result, and performance numbers are expected next week.
All of Laminar Research's development and shenanigans are documented through their official blog, which dates back as far as 2005. Find out what the team is doing behind the scenes here.

REX Simulations To Port Products to X-Plane
By: Sam Clark April 27, 2019         Uber-popular Prepar3D/FSX developers REX Simulations have announced in a live-stream that they're working with X-Plane in a bid to port Environment Force, a product that is currently in beta for Prepar3D, to Laminar's sim.
The developer is also known for Sky Force 3D, which is a full solution for weather, with both textures and an engine included.
The clip, broadcast on Twitch just an hour or so ago, sees the developers discuss whether they should even be talking about the subject (X-Plane) in this live-stream, before giving in and saying the following:
"We're working.. we can disclose that.. we are working with some tests with X-Plane. Obviously we need to get this product out first but the idea is to even to port this to X-Plane. The answer is yes. I'd say we are in the development phase - an early one."
You can find out more over on the REX Simulations Twitch channel, which you can find here.
NOTE: All screenshots used in this article are from the Prepar3D/FSX versions of REX's products.
We apologise for the clip being cut off somewhat - the full VOD can be found here.

Worldwide Texture Replacement "Global Earth" Now Available
By: Sam Clark April 18, 2019           A new product has appeared on simMarket courtesy of virgin developer Resentium. The addon claims to be "a new ear of reality in the simulator", and includes improvements in three different sections of the simulator.
First, the addon includes variable 'non-tile' texture replacements, replacing the default ground textures. Secondly, Global Earth includes improved autogen buildings, and lastly, the product improves upon X-Plane's default forest representation.
The feature list can be found below:
Highly detailed custom terrain textures whole the world High resolution of all terrain textures whole the world Highly detailed mountains area Removed sharp transitions between different terrain textures Work well with any mesh for x-plane 11 Improved autogen textures   Improved facades textures   Newton lightning from autogenes Autogenic has realistic color shades Partial application of PBR technology to autogen Well visible from height the color of roofs Work well with Ortho4XP Realistic dense forest Gorgeous trees color It is important to note that Global Earth is not compatible with "season change programs", which likely means that Maxx-XP's TerraMAXX does not work with the new product.

Just minutes ago, aircraft development team FlightFactor announced the release of a new beta update to their A320 aircraft. Beta version 0.10.0 only has a four line change-log, however it includes one of the most anticipated additions to the aircraft since its release last year: the weather radar.
xEnviro developers have confirmed to Threshold that the weather radar in the A320 will be fully compatible upon the release of version 1.10.
In addition to weather radar, v0.10.0 also includes a fleshing out of cabin functionality, with a new flight attendant panel being added alongside cabin illumination controls.
A320 developer Asso debuted the changes in a post that reads:
"Hi guys! We have new beta version available.  Please update your aircraft. To get the beta you need to make sure you checked beta checkbox in the updater. Please remember this is BETA version.  It may be unstable and may have bugs.  Please report bugs and issues here. We'll do our best to fix it."

Following the popular initial freeware release of xOrganizer, a payware version 2, rebuilt from the ground-up, has been released. xOrganizer is a utility designed to simplify and organize scenery installation and usage within X-Plane. Users can:
Manage the load order and enable/disable scenery packages Enable/disable plugins and scripts Load X-Plane with different settings (for instance VR vs normal) View airports included in the scenery packages (also projected on a map) View the coverage of your scenery on a map Manage the versions and download locations of your scenery packages Enable/disable GroundTraffic plugins ‍Improvements compared to version 1.3 include:
Completely new code: very fast with the use of an internal database + a lot of improvements/fixes Complete manual of xOrganizer Improved overview of scenery: favorites folder added, grouped by continent, etc. Improved profile functionality (sets in the previous version of xOrganizer) Improved version functionality: store hyperlinks to download locations New: select only the modules of xOrganizer that you find useful (scenery, plugins/scripts or  X-Plane preferences) New: profiles for plugins/scripts New: easy check on recently installed scenery New: scan for broken/bad links/shortcuts in the Custom Scenery folder New: option to switch off GroundTraffic plugins (per airport package) New: clean user interface New: settings menu with several user options No internet connection needed during use (offline maps) Further new functionality is under development. New updates will of course be free for all users of the full version
Regarding making version 2 payware, the creator writes,
"The previous version was freeware, but with this new version I could no longer justify this. Improving and extending xOrganizer took me so much time I could either quit or take this step. I hope that everyone will still support me and find the price fair for what xOrganizer offers now".

He has kindly has offered a demo to allow users to test his product which can be downloaded here.
For those who wish to purchase xOrganizer, they may do so here for $9.95

After his highly successful release of Munich Airport, MisterX6 has decided to go worldwide with his next payware product, SFD Global. The package will overhaul X-Plane’s current non-airport scenery by completely changing the terrain textures, reconstructing certain autogen regions, and adding HD forest and vegetation textures.
    Terrain Textures
SFD Global will replace X-Plane’s default terrain textures with new handmade alternatives. The new textures have been crafted using elements from high resolution orthoimagery. Extreme attention to detail and the seamless blending of elements has these previews looking great so far.
    Autogen Regions
The package will also include multiple sets of regional autogen. These sets will consist of new detailed buildings with PBR materials and handcrafted autogen tiles with details like trees, cars, and furniture.
The first three regions featured are the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East. More regions are still to come and will be announced at a later date. American autogen will not be touched since Laminar's default autogen simulates it well.
    Landmarks
To complete the product, SFD has also included some famous landmarks located all over the world in SFD Global. Currently, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy have both been completed but more will come with time.
