  5. Brief X-Plane Vulkan and Metal Update Over on the X-Plane Developer website, Ben Supnik has posted a brief update regarding X-Plane’s new graphics engines. The key points addressed in this post state what the Laminar team have currently been able to get working in X-Plane with these two new engines: Plane-Maker and Airfoil Maker run in Vulkan and Metal. X-Plane runs in Vulkan and Metal up to the main menu (e.g. the app starts) but can’t yet fly or show scenery. The Vulkan and Metal code runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. The Vulkan code runs on Nvidia, AMD and Intel drivers. All shaders are ported. All of the zoo animals (abstractions around part of the graphics engine) are now complete. We killed off the last 2 or 3 since the live feed. Ben states that over the last couple of weeks himself and Sidney have been working to port all rendering passes to the new code. This means that they don’t have to go through OpenGL to fly the aircraft. An important point made at the end of the post states that at this stage they aren’t currently able to give a measure on what performance will be like with these new engines. However, they state that once they’re able to sit down in the sim with aircraft they should be able to give an idea of what kind of performance can be expected with Metal and Vulkan. SOURCE INFO Vulkan and Metal - a Quick Status Update | X-Plane Developer DEVELOPER.X-PLANE.COM Just a quick update on our progress with Vulkan and Metal. This is the latest in a string of backwards-and-forwards behavior from MilViz as they weigh up the cost involved in porting the turboprop airliner to X-Plane. In a post on Facebook, the developer simply says; Included is a link to this Kickstarter campaign in which they request $27,000 Canadian dollars to ensure that the ATR will be developed for XP. As if to add time pressure to the equation, the funds must be raised by May 23rd (two months from now), otherwise the project will be dropped. 23. LiveTraffic Last updated 6 days ago LiveTraffic is a plugin for the flight simulator X-Plane to show real-life traffic, based on publicly available live flight data, as additional planes within X-Plane. Long queues at KLAS, 07-JAN-2019, 14:42 It came into being when I was looking at plugins simulating additional traffic in X-Plane and thinking at that time: Why do they try to simulate traffic and invent flight models when there is flight data available online which brings yet another piece of reality into the simulation? Why can't one just read the data and display the aircraft? Well...turned out it's not that easy 😏 I spent an awful lot of time dealing with the inaccuracies of the data sources, see Limitations. There are only timestamps and positions. Heading and speed is point-in-time info but not a reliable vector to the next position. There is no information on pitch or bank angle, or on gear or flaps positions. There is no info where exactly a plane touched or left ground. There are several data feeders, which aren't in synch and contradict each other. So I ended up inventing my own flight models to make aircrafts move more or less smoothly from one data point to the next, extend gear and flaps, pitch up an down, flare, rotate etc. Because an airport is a naturally interesting hot spot of plane movements, but due to simple physics often only sparingly covered with ADS-B receivers and hence live data, there is even lots of code to simulate final approach, landing, and roll-out for planes for which data coverage ends during approach. There is extensive "data cleansing", which removes up to half the data...and many thanks here to "my" beta testers, who spent hours to find, test out, and document hot spots of inaccuracies in the world! Status Available and downloadable from X-Plane.org. License MIT License, essentially freeware. Open Source, available on GitHub. And as I keep getting questions to that respect: It means LiveTraffic is freeware at no cost. Now and in the future. I will not even provide an option for donations. Instead, consider supporting the tracking data services, which provide the raw data, which LiveTraffic only enables to show traffic. Credits Man thanks to my beta testers 172MC, Flap, GAK, safeflight, FlyMe2dMoon, KosFlyer, akports103, Torkermax, and mainbrain! Thanks to sparker for providing the Linux build environment based on Docker. LiveTraffic is based on a number of other great libraries and APIs, most notably: X-Plane APIs to integrate with X-Plane libxplanemp for display of CSL models, which is also the basis for XSquawkBox, X-IvAp, and the like, thanks to kuroneko for his continued support! CURL for network protocol support parson as JSON parser libpng, required by libxplanemp libz/zlib, required by libpng And let's not forget about the CSL model developers like Bluebell, Oktalist, and X-CSL, to name just a few. 24. The VSKYLABS Test-Pilot: ICON-A5 Project v1.0 was just released! This project is part of the VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot' series, designed specifically for use with X-Plane 11.30+ cutting edge Experimental Flight Model (should be enabled in X-Plane's General Settings menu). The ICON-A5 is an American Light Sport Aircraft Single Engine amphibious aircraft. It is constructed mostly from composites materials (carbon fiber) and powered by the electronically fuel injected Rotax 921iS engine. It was designed to allow a close and intimate interaction with the world, in the form of an amphibious aircraft with folding wings. This combination is allowing the A5 to be operated to and from almost every spot on the planet, from smooth short runways, dirt or beach strips...parked in a home-garage! The ICON-A5 design concept was to make it accessible and safe for aviation new-comers and beginner pilots, deriving a straight forward, car-like cockpit features and displays along with various safety systems and safety oriented flying characteristics such as the Anti-Spin aerodynamic design. The A5 is taking advantage of an Angle of Attack Gauge (AoA) which is “summing up” the aircraft’s current aerodynamic situation at any speed load and maneuver. The A5 is also designed to be a spin-resistant aircraft, which will allow continuous control during stall. The A5 is equipped with a ballistic parachute system. Project Highlights: The most comprehensive VSKYLABS Project up to date. VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot' Project. Highly defined flight dynamics model of the ICON-A5, built around the powerful, native X-Plane 11.30+ 'Experimental Flight Model' environment (must be selected in the General settings window in X-Plane 11). 'Built for VR' - Virtual Reality Ready (of course it is a joy to fly in 2D...). Unique aspects of the ICON-A5 are simulated and are part of the flying experience along with the unique and authentic systems, cockpit panels and display systems: Highly detailed, fully animated aircraft exterior and interior 3D model. Fully functional, authentic A5 Angle of Attack display system. Unique and authentic iconography and embedded into the display systems in the cockpit. CAP system (Ballistic Parachute system) modeled along with automatic gear retraction upon activation. Bilge water build-up and purge system are modeled. Removable cockpit windows. The A5's unique custom designed, authentic Landing and Taxi lights. Fully animated wing-fold mechanism, embedded into the flight dynamics model/physics. Custom built PFD Companion and a fully functional Autopilot system included. High quality, animated pilot figure for highly immersive experience in 2D/VR modes. Built-in Avitab Plugin compatibility (AviTab plugin is not included). FMOD Sounds. The project is under constant maintenance and development - updates are free. Highly responsive VSKYLABS support forums. 25. VSKYLABS Aerospace Simulations has officially released their ICON-A5 for X-Plane 11. Part of their 'Test-Pilot' series, the aircraft is designed to make use of X-Plane 11.30's experimental flight model, and is accompanied by many features. The aircraft is an American light single engine amphibious aircraft, ideal for sports-related flying. Its folding wings and car-like cockpit allows anybody to easily fly and store the aircraft, as well as fly it nearly anywhere around the world with short takeoff and landing distances.
