  3. Our friends at Stairport Sceneries are mere days away from releasing their latest X-Plane scenery, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (EDDB), developed in partnership with Aerosoft, LimeSim and 29Palms. The under construction airport is billed as the replacement for the areas ageing and congested main airfield, Berlin Tegel (EDDT). Stairport Sceneries' X-Plane rendition of EDDB was first announced in November last year and is based on the Prepar3D "Professional" version first released in March 2018 by Aerosoft. Head developer Marten has kindly sent us some exclusive images to share, along with a release target for BER: The feature list for the X-Plane version of BER was released back in January, which you can view below: Highly detailed rendition of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport "Willy Brandt" (BER) Custom animated approach lights (SAM Plugin required) All jetways animated (SAM Plugin required) Includes the older Schönefeld (SXF) airport (north of BER) with the same level of detail Includes two configs to switch between SXF and BER operation Numerous dynamic objects like apron vehicles High resolution day and night textures Extensive coverage of over 100 km² with high resolution aerial imagery (0.2-0.4 m/px) Realistic 3D grass and vegetation Ground Layout: End of 2018 Compatible with default AI-Traffic and WorldTraffic 3 A notable addition to the feature list is full Scenery Animation Manager plugin (SAM)compatibility, coincidentally also developed by Stairport Sceneries. The plugin, which you can download here, essentially allows the addition of a bunch of moving parts into sceneries, such as multi-door moving jetways, animated ground staff and operable hangar doors. See more about SAM in our exclusive article about the plugin from last year. You can see more about Aerosoft/Stairport Sceneries Berlin Brandenburg XP by viewing one of our previous articles. 6. COLIMATA Preview Video Drops on Concorde's 50 Anniversary Fifty years ago today in 1969, Concorde took to the skies for the very first time. Although she is no longer flying today, COLIMATA have steadily been progressing with their X-Plane 11 rendition of the iconic aircraft, which is set to go into early access soon. It follows on from a statement given two weeks ago, which read: "The early access version includes all main parts of the final aircraft. There are some components that will be finished and features added during the summer. To give you an idea: For example, the handy pushback truck will not be ready on day one of the release. Fortunately, Concorde has a reverse gear 😉 (thrust reversers). Another example: Not all complex CIVA functions or Autopilot functions will be available immediately. During the summer more and more will be added. "The aircraft is built in a manner that the user normally just needs to update one little plugin file (~2MB) and the new functions are available. Very handy. The early access version will ship at a discount, the final version later is included in this price. It will be available in the store on x-plane.org. "Early access versions are not for everybody. Some users accept only perfectly finished aircraft in every aspect and that's ok. I will public all details of what you get and what is not ready on day 1 to make this as transparent as possible. "Concorde is easy to fly but not so easy to manage. With the early access version, you can start to fly and learn Concorde. And there is a lot to learn if somebody what's to dig deep. Concorde has no flaps or speedbrakes for example and comes down at incredible pitch angles during landing. She's really unique in so many aspects. As with all our aircraft (FA-18F, MiG-29), we also try to find ways that the person that normally flies props or other aircraft types is able to manage the aircraft for a quick flight without studying for weeks. "For the 50th birthday of Concorde I will release the next video. This time in color and cockpit alive 🙂" Work in progress images from July, 2018 ‍ COLIMATA's Concorde has had several previews in the past already. Our coverage includes: Preview: COLIMATA Concorde video COLIMATA Shows Progress of Concorde's Cockpit More Exterior Shots of COLIMATA's Concorde ‍ Stay up-to-date by finding the official preview thread here. 9. DMO is working on the final stretch of their S-64 Skycrane for X-Plane and they are bringing us some new intel on the model. As the team moves near the release of the S-64 (no release date yet, folks – keep it cool; the team’s hard at work), we got access to some more exciting details and screenshot of this amazing beast of the skies. Most of the work being done right now has to do with small details and improving the 3D model and the textures but DMO is already working on some of the scenery they promised to release to give us a better sense of purpose for the S-64. We will have a ski resort, a remote firefighting helicopter base, a firefighting crew in need of assistance and a flatbed truck loaded with HVAC units near a tall building. Aside from that, DMO has modified the water drop system (which they had working already – you can see a screenshot at the top of this article) to use the new particle system which is looking quite amazing! DMO mentions it as being “the pièce de résistance of this model”. I was dying to see a developer doing this and, now, DMO brings this to the giant of the aerial firefighting. Thank you! The particle system is also bringing the turbine and APU exhausts to life as well as any engine fires you might have. DMO says the model is not too far away from being able to be fully tested. After that, I presume it’s a matter of time (and some debugging) until it can become a part of our virtual hangars. Stay tuned, folks. This one should not be too far away! 12. Does PMDG Need X-Plane More Than X-Plane Needs PMDG? Saturday, February 23, 2019 marked a major turning point in the history of PMDG: we saw the ESP giant discontinue further 32-bit development of new product lines.Although, in the course of two separate forum posts, little direct reference was made to X-Plane, an interesting opportunity to analyse their future on Laminar’s platform presents itself. It is well known that the next major product out the door at PMDG will be the third iteration of their 737 product line. Although the product has not received an official name yet, it is referred to internally as the NG3, and, according to Randazzo, is about to enter beta testing in short order. It is widely believed that the product will be largely analogous to the 747 Queen of the Skies package and would thus contain most, if not all, of the existing 737NG variants, with a later 737 MAX expansion on the cards, as is known with virtual certainty from earlier reveals. Randazzo hinted that the 32-bit discontinuation would free up some much-needed developer resources, which would enable them to shift their attention to other, parallel developments such as X-Plane releases. It is interesting to note, however, that if PMDG were to release the NG3/MAX for X-Plane, they would be hopelessly late to the party. We already have several good options for this airplane, such as the freeware Zibo modification, which already has 70 to 80% of the feature set of the NGX, with a MAX to follow. This does not bode well for the NG3 on XP, especially given the price point at which it would likely be sold. Nevertheless, Randazzo has stressed that PMDG will indeed appear on X-Plane, so it will be interesting to note the order and timeframe in which the products will be released. "We already have several good options for this airplane (the Boeing 737), such as the freeware Zibo modification, which already has 70 to 80% of the feature set of the NGX" Given the existence of freeware options, PMDG is likely to initially focus their efforts on products other than the 737, such as the 747. Even there, they would not be alone given PSX exists. It is X-Plane compatible with ease, and offers much deeper features, albeit at a slightly higher price point. Still, it is with little doubt the most detailed representation of its subject matter on the market, for consumers anyway, unless one takes into account the absence of a 747-8 option of course. It may, in fact, be the case that the 747v3 was primarily designed as a platform for the 747-8, which was known to be the big seller – Randazzo has himself admitted that the latest glass-jets make the most financial sense, and, as such, any further classic releases from them should be considered side projects. Considering its ensuing retirement from airline fleets worldwide, with BA likely to be the last passenger operator in about 2024 after 40 years of service, the 747-400 could itself be considered a classic, at least in passenger operations. When I met with Lufthansa representatives in Frankfurt last autumn, they commented that the 747-8 would be kept in their passenger fleet for the foreseeable future, with the 777X being looked at as a replacement. In parallel, the 747-8 should be a keeper in X-Plane also. PMDG's current range of Boeing airliners for Prepar3D, excluding expansion packs. This takes us to the 777. Although there is at least one worthwhile XP rendition in early development, and another in rumoured development, here is where I see the best entry point for Randazzo’s outfit. For the purposes of this essay, the first version of FF’s 777 should be considered outdated. Given the stature that the 777X will likely occupy in tomorrow’s commercial aviation market, it will be interesting to see whether PMDG has considered a strategy analogous to the 747v3/NG3, and offer a 777v2 with 777X as an expansion. Equally intense rumors have surrounded a potential PMDG 787: this is a product we might not see on ESP because of QualityWings’ offering, but that remains an option with regards to X-Plane. It would certainly satisfy their current criteria for choosing new projects. A different question entirely, however, remains whether this community actually needs PMDG at all – we have a plethora of “native” developers with more arriving on the scene on a daily basis. Multiple of these should be considered capable of taking over the market niche occupied by PMDG on ESP, such as FlightFactor. It is also interesting to note that Robert Randazzo has used some quite strong language with respect to the X-Plane community. This could be taken as implying that we do not represent a priority for the company at the moment. A case in point is their negligence with respect to updating the DC-6 for XP11, and despite comments to the contrary by Randazzo, it remains possible that our community will occupy a secondary position in their portfolio. Additionally, many of the payware development projects currently in progress for our platform more or less directly disrupt the PMDG portfolio – the SSG 747-8i v2 is a good example. Altogether, it is clear that PMDG will have to act soon instead of Soon™ if they want to gain any foothold on this part of the market. Otherwise, there will be no free seats for them at the table. Orbx arrived on time – what about PMDG? 21. Orbx have released the initial list of Points of Interest to be included in their upcoming TrueEarth Washington scenery pack. TrueEarth Washington will be first in a range of sceneries spanning the Pacific Northwest, the first of which is due in Q2 this year. Suggestions on which Points of Interest (POIs) to include in the Washington region scenery were largely made by the community this time around, in stark contrast to the behind-closed-doors process for the group's smash hit TrueEarth Great Britain series. Orbx welcomed suggestions on which landmarks people would like to see via a thread on their forum, where users would attach a Google Earth .kmz file with the location of the Point of Interest. In a post on the suggestion thread, Lead POI Coordinator of TrueEarth Regions Byron Farrow posted the following; Also included in the post is a screenshot of the included POIs as of the time of posting. Closeups on the Seattle metro area, plus an overview of the entire state. You can learn more about upcoming TrueEarth USA regions by visiting one of our previous articles, which details potential release details for the Pacific Northwest sceneries.
