  5. Bell Nexus. Image via Bell Bell rings in the new year by revealing its autonomous VTOL aircraft at the Consumer Electronics Show. President and CEO Mitch Snyder says travel by air taxi will be a reality by the mid 2020s. Bell unveiled its vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) autonomous air taxi at a press event at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas today. The Bell Nexus, named to signify the convergence of transport and technology and of comfort and convenience, will enter service as part of the Uber Elevate initiative, which plans to launch fleets of electric VTOL aircraft in Dallas, Los Angeles and an unnamed international market by the mid 2020s. Mitch Snyder, Bell’s president and CEO, introduced the Bell Nexus VTOL aircraft at CES on Monday. Bell, which, according to president and CEO Mitch Snyder, dropped Helicopters from its name to better reflect its focus on creating opportunities in urban air mobility, showcased a version of its air taxi cabin concept at CES last year. This year, the company will display an updated, full-scale mockup of the hybrid-electric powered vehicle, equipped with six tilting ducted fans. While Bell is leading the design, development and production of the Bell Nexus, it’s collaborating with Safran (hybrid propulsion and drive systems), EPS (energy storage systems), Thales (Flight Control Computer hardware and software), Moog (flight control actuation systems) and Garmin (avionics and the vehicle management computer) to bring the on-demand mobility solution to market. View image on Twitter Room for One More The Bell Nexus is a four-passenger vehicle with space for a pilot or mission manager. “The aircraft is designed to be fully automated,” Snyder announced at today’s press conference. “Once the regulatory authorities and community accept that it’s ok to not have a pilot, then it will be a five-passenger vehicle.” Bell Nexus interior. Image via Bell Bell will also have a flight simulator at CES this year in order to determine how the average person might operate the Bell Nexus. “We want to see what’s intuitive for people to learn how to fly these as opposed to just pilots,” Snyder explained. Coming Soon to a City Near You Bell aims to make air taxis that are safe, quiet and affordable. “We’re still working with Uber to determine the cost of traveling in the vehicle but it’s going to be more affordable than you think,” Snyder said. “The ability of these aircraft to [complete] multiple trips within an hour window allows you to work the economics in a favorable way,” added Michael Thacker, Bell’s executive vice-president of Technology and Innovation. While Bell is working closely with Uber, Thacker insists that the company is setting its sights even further. “We are taking Uber’s specifications into consideration, but this vehicle actually goes beyond what the Uber specifications require,” he said. “While Uber is one of the potential applications, it’s not the only one.” Snyder and Thacker are optimistic about the timeline. “Defining and developing urban air mobility is a complex undertaking, requiring collaboration across industries, regulatory agencies and other communities of interest,” Snyder said. “Although there is still a lot of work to be done, the future is real, it’s possible, and it’s coming soon.” SOURCE INFO DEVELOPER POST LINK : NEWS SITE ARTICLE LINK : https://apex.aero/2019/01/07/bell-nexus-uber-elevate-vtol-air-taxi-ces

  7. The pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 were engaged in a futile tug-of-war with the plane's automatic systems in the minutes before it plunged into the ocean, killing all 189 people on board. But investigators say they are at a loss to explain why the pilots didn't follow the same procedure performed by another flight crew the previous day when they encountered a similar issue. A preliminary report into the crash released Wednesday by Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) reveals more details about the final moments of Flight 610, but acknowledges many questions remain. Data retrieved from the flight recorder shows the pilots repeatedly fought to override an automatic safety system installed in the Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane, which pulled the plane's nose down more than two dozen times. The system was responding to faulty data, which suggested that the nose was tilted at a higher angle than it was, indicating the plane was at risk of stalling. According to the report, the pilots first manually corrected an "automatic aircraft nose down" two minutes after takeoff and performed the same procedure again and again before the plane hurtled nose-first into the Java Sea. CNN aviation analyst David Soucie said that the circumstances created by the plane's automatic correction would have made pilot intervention "impossible." "The fact that they fought against the MCAS (multiple) times with the trim settings was an impossible scenario to recover from," he said. 20. One for you Mr Edson! The Rise And Fall Of Hooters Air You might not remember it, but at one point Hooters had an airline. Hooters Air launched in 2003, but closed about three years later. The company cited a number of reasons for the airline's failure, including a $40 million loss. But in the short time that Hooters Air existed, it made a major economic impact on one city in particular — Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — that's where the airline was headquartered, and where it brought thousands of tourists every week. 22. Emergency landing as United Airlines plane engine cover falls off mid-flight NBN Editorial Team February 14, 2018 Comments Offon Emergency landing as United Airlines plane engine cover falls off mid-flight News Headlines Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment passengers aboard a United Airlines flight to Hawaii were told to prepare for an emergency landing after an engine cover fell off. Flight 1175 from California was able to touch down safely in Honolulu on Tuesday afternoon, but only after the pilots sent out a distress call for the emergency services to be ready to meet it on the ground. Those on-board had heard a “loud bang” around 35 minutes before the Boeing 777-222 was due to land, which turned out to be the sound of an engine cover coming off. Image:The engine cover came off with a good portion of the flight still to go. Pic: Mariah Amerine “There was a loud bang and then the plane really started shaking,” passenger Allison Sudiacal told Hawaii News Now. “There was a loud boom and then it was like rattling, and the plane was kind of shaking like boom, boom, boom. “They (the pilots) let us know that we had to brace for impact in case there was a rough landing. It was scary. But they did a really good job.” Image:The plane on the runway after landing. Pic: Peter Lemme Another passenger, Maria Falaschi, who posted images on Twitter showing the engine with its exterior cover missing, described the journey as “the scariest flight of my life”. Video uploaded to social media by other passengers shows the engine shaking back and forth, with pieces of the displaced cover flapping in the wind. Google engineer Erik Haddad appeared to remain calm throughout, despite having the perfect view of the fault. “That looks bad, plane and simple,” he quipped on Twitter, before adding: “I don’t see anything about this in the manual.” The incident is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). United Airlines said in a statement: “United flight 1175 travelling to Honolulu from San Francisco landed safely after the pilots called for an emergency landing because of an issue with the #2 engine. “Our pilots followed all necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft. The aircraft taxied to the gate and passengers deplaned normally. “United is fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA investigation of the event SOURCE INFO DEVELOPER POST LINK : NEWS SITE ARTICLE LINK : http://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-43056912/engine-drama-sparks-mid-air-emergency
