  1. Flight Sim Development Group, often abbreviated as FSDG, have today made a long awaited return to X-Plane, with the announcement of multiple new airfields for Laminar's sim. We can reveal one of the airports coming over from FSDG's ESP-platform range of sceneries is Graz (LOWG) Airport in Austria, which was converted Stairport Sceneries. 2. Chris and his team just posted on Twitter about the road to their Early Access release Q2 2019. Here is the Steam article, the interesting parts are in bold here : Ok now I'm excited 😛
  3. The 747 Classic is one of those aircraft that many simmers have been longing for in recent years, but has seemingly gone ignored by some of the bigger names in the aircraft development community. That is, of course, until back in June of 2018, when Just Flight announced they had taken up the mantle to bring a high-quality rendition of this aircraft to our sims. This announcement was met with much excitement and yet, left the community wanting more. Thanks to the extremely generous folks over at Just Flight, I’m proud to bring you new and exclusive previews on the upcoming 747, as well as a ton of new information on the project sourced from an interview with Just Flight’s own Martyn Northall! The interview with Martyn touches on nearly everything you could want to know about the upcoming 747 Classic, from systems depth, to a potential virtual flight engineer, as well as the variants that Just Flight will be creating. Be sure to stay tuned in the coming days and weeks for some new information on the 747 Classic! Here’s the full interview with Martyn: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Our first question is pretty simple, but probably requires a longer answer. Why? Why did you decide to bring the 747 Classic series to the simulator instead of other vintage airlines? We are always on the look out for possible future aircraft that have either yet to be created for FSX/P3D, have been created but not to a complex standard or are from many years ago. The 747 Classic was one of the favourites on our list (I have a model of a British Caledonian 747 Classic in my office) and to be honest we were quite surprised that one wasn’t already available. It’s undoubtedly an iconic aircraft but obviously a very complex type, requiring a significant investment of time and cost. We published the CLS 747-200/300 quite a few years ago and it was a very popular product. We originally envisaged reusing some of the assets from that product but ultimately decided that a ‘clean-sheet design’ was the best option for achieving the standard that we wanted. I believe we’ve got a strong reputation for classic British aircraft, but we’re keen not to get stuck in any one ‘genre’ and the 747 Classic seemed like a logical step towards larger and more complex aircraft. Is this an internal development? How many people are working on the project? What experiences have they had on aircraft development? Yes, this is an in-house product, so the development is being led by the Just Flight development team. That team consists of predominately full-time employees but also external partners, and part-time partners who work on our aircraft alongside their day jobs. It’s a diverse team! There have been at least ten people working directly on the development of the 747, albeit not necessarily all at the same time as the project progresses through several stages (modelling, coding etc.). In addition to the development team there are probably another five people contributing to manuals, marketing and other non-development elements, and then a further 20+ testers. The past experience of our in-house team is quite well known (https://www.justflight.com/category/developed-in-house) but we’ve also brought in new expertise from developers behind some of the popular study-level airliners that have been released for FSX/P3D in recent years. I think it’s fair to say that your internal team has spent a lot of time on creating high quality GA aircraft as of late – why the change now to something much bigger and much more complex? We’ve always strived for variety in what we develop to keep things fresh, for the sake of our own sanity as well as attempting to cater to the wide-ranging tastes of our customers. Since 2013 we have developed everything from a PA28 and C152 to a Canberra PR9 and Tornado, and a L-1011 Tristar. We’ve released quite a few GA aircraft in recent years but that is as much a result of the shorter development times for aircraft of that scale than a deliberate focus on that one genre. Whilst continuing to develop GA aircraft for FSX, P3D, X-Plane 11 and Aerofly FS 2, the next couple of years will see the development of several airliners. The VC10, 747, and 146 are already public knowledge but we have at least two more in the early stages of development. We are continuing to invest in the expansion of our development team and that has brought in not only additional capacity for a greater number of product releases each year but also a wealth of experience with complex aircraft, and our goal is to develop complex airliners alongside our existing GA and military product range to offer the best possible variety to our customers. In terms of system depth and usability, how detailed are you going to make the 747 Classic? Modelled systems, failures, etc? As with previous aircraft such as the Tornado GR1 and Vulcan, our focus is on providing highly functional and realistic representations of the real aircraft, including all the core systems – electrical, fuel, hydraulic etc. Those systems will very closely match the real aircraft based on our studies of a vast collection of reference material and the involvement of air and groundcrew with real-world 747 Classic experience. The 747 will bypass some of the FSX/P3D limitations by running systems ‘externally’ to the simulator, such as engine parameters and fuel flow. We’ve also been developing a new INS unit for a while now and that will be included for authentic navigation. Failures will be simulated due to the way the systems are programmed, for example a failure of a specific transformer-rectifier or AC bus in the electrical system would result in the correct subsequent failures and switching logic, but we’re not aiming for a Level-D simulator. Our business model is obviously quite different to those of developers such as PMDG and FS Labs. 747 Classic hasn’t been our sole focus for multiple years with a corresponding £120 price-tag, so decisions had to be made about what features, including failures, were worthwhile for routine flights. One of strengths as a developer is that we listen and react to, and actively encourage, feedback and suggestions from our customers, so we will continue to build on the complexity and functionality of our aircraft in response to that. Will you be making use of the latest technology such as PBR texturing or windshield effects? We are continuing to explore the technical possibilities that are emerging as a result of new features in Prepar3D such as PBR materials and windshield effects. Our aim is to include as many of these features as possible and we expect that PBR materials will become standard on all our future aircraft including 747 Classic, just as they already are on our X-Plane 11 aircraft. As demonstrated by some of the recent announcements from other FSX/P3D developers, continuing to develop for FSX alongside P3D v4 creates quite a lot of extra work and in some cases constrains our ability to add new P3D-specific functionality, but we are working hard to address that (and our intention is to continue supporting FSX). The 747 Classics was a very hands-on aircraft, requiring 3 people to operate it. Are you offering some kind of virtual flight engineer to take some of the load off the user? This is an area that we will provide more details on in future project updates as it is dependent on many other areas of the systems programming, but as with our past aircraft one of our key goals is to develop an aircraft with excellent usability regardless of your skill-level. The 747 Classic has a formidable Flight Engineer’s panel with controls for many critical systems, so we will cater for the single-pilot aspect of operating aircraft within a simulation environment, including automation where appropriate. You have so far announced the 747-100, 747-200/F, what are the chances we’ll see other variants of the aircraft, such as the SP, SOFIA and -300, depending on how it is received by the community? Following on from the -100, -200 and -200F, we are developing the -300, SP, VC-25 (‘Air Force One’) and E-4B (‘Advanced Airborne Command Post’) variants. This was in direct response to feedback from the community as there was plenty of interest in those variants. They are all derivatives of the -200 and will likely share common virtual cockpits and systems rather than each being a unique product, so will form an expansion pack for 747 Classic owners. We’ll bring you more details on those following the release of the base pack. There are other variants and hundreds of livery options, so much like with our PA28s, we are looking at building on the release of 747 Classic to create a series of 747 products. Do you, or any of the development team, have any stories about the 747 Classis series you’d like to share? Either from real life past adventures or during development. A key requirement for any in-house aircraft project is to get access to the real-world aircraft. In the case of the 747 Classic, we visited an aircraft at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome to take hundreds of photos of every part of the exterior and interior. It was a great experience for an aviation enthusiast – we were dropped off beside the aircraft, given a torch and instructed to access the interior by climbing into the avionics bay near the nose-gear and out through a hatch in the floor of the first-class cabin. Walking through the dark, empty interior of a 747 makes you truly appreciate the scale of the aircraft. We had the opportunity to explore the entire aircraft, looking in all the compartments such as the crew-rest areas that you typically wouldn’t get access to. There are several 747 Classics at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome and one of them is stripped bare and is occasionally used for Christmas work parties! Anything else you would like to add? Thanks for the continued support from the community, including FS Elite and all your readers who we regularly chat with in the comments sections. Just Flight is undergoing an exciting period of growth as we continue to evolve from being a traditional publisher and webstore to one of the largest developers in the industry. Last year was a record one for us as we released 11 of our own products, and we’ve been really pleased to see all the great feedback. The coming year will see the release of a wide variety of airliners, GA and military aircraft, as well as scenery and utilities for FSX, P3D, X-Plane 11 and Aerofly FS2, so there’s plenty of work to keep our development team busy! 13. Development Update: Just Flight & Just Trains - December 2018 So where did that year go? Seems only a matter of weeks since we released our first add-ons of the year back in January. We hope you've enjoyed the content that the Just Flight and Just Trains teams have brought you this year, there has been the usual varied mix of new add-ons from Just Flight, perhaps less so from Just Trains but that's something we're aiming to remedy in 2019. All the products released in 2018 can be found in the Latest Releases sections, here for Just Flight and here for Just Trains. Please read on for the very latest from the two development camps... It’s been a busy end to 2018 for the Just Flight development team. In the past few months we have released the PA-28-181 Archer III, Duchess Model 76 and the Avro Vulcan B Mk. 2 for FSX and P3D, and those products continue to receive regular updates in response to your feedback and to add even greater functionality. Following the release of P3D v4.4 a few weeks ago, we are currently working on a Physically Based Rendering (PBR) upgrade for the Vulcan, bringing the aircraft up to the very latest visual standards offered by the simulator, and we will have more news on that early next year. Looking ahead to 2019, the team are working on a variety of new products for FSX/P3D and X-Plane 11. There will be plenty of variety for FSX/P3D users with the Tornado F3, the next generation of our VFR Real Scenery and some classic airliners currently in development. Our popular Traffic Global product will also be coming out of early access. The PA-28-181 Archer III and Duchess Model 76 will be coming to X-Plane 11 in the new year, and we will be releasing significant updates for our existing aircraft range to bring them up to the latest XP11.30 standards. We'd like to thank you for your continued interest, support and custom and we sincerely hope you'll enjoy all that we have in store for you in 2019. Here's an update on some of the products we're currently working on. VFR REAL SCENERY NEXGEN 3D The first volume – Southern England & South Wales – is in final testing at the moment and the other three volumes are nearing completion. We are estimating release in early January. Feedback from our testers has been very positive. The latest version of P3D (Version 4.4) features improvements to the way photo textures are handled and VFRRS NexGen now looks even more impressive in 4.4. As a reminder, existing owners of any of our VFR Real Scenery downloads (or disc versions purchased from us) will be entitled to a significant discount on the NexGen series. VFR Real Scenery NexGen 3D TORNADO F3 Soon to be added to Just Flight’s already impressive hangar of military aircraft, Tornado F3 development continues at a pace – new HUD, Head-Down-Display, RHWR, weapons management, navigator TV displays, communication and night lighting systems are in place, and the high quality aircraft model is entering its final stages. Tornado F3 VC10 PROFESSIONAL Following on from the release of VC10 Jetliner, we have been busy upgrading the aircraft to our ‘Professional’ level with fully functional systems, including custom-coded electrical, fuel, hydraulic and pressurisation systems. The navigation capabilities will also receive an upgrade with a brand-new INS unit fitted to the navigator station. In addition to the systems upgrade, we are working on new Super VC10 and RAF (C1K, K3 and K4) variants which will feature a variety of animations including refuelling equipment and main-deck cargo doors, as well as cockpit modifications. We are in the latter stages of the systems coding and work is well underway on the new variants, so keep an eye on the In Development section for the first set of images! SUD AVIATION CARAVELLE III The Caravelle development team are hard at work modelling and texturing the remaining areas of the cockpit following a research trip to photograph a real-world Caravelle simulator in Germany. It is always challenging to collate the extensive reference material that is needed to accurately reproduce classic aircraft such as the Caravelle, and these research trips provide us with the opportunity to explore every corner and peek inside every hatch of the real aircraft. With the modelling work drawing to a close in the new year, our coders will soon begin the process of bringing the aircraft to life with custom-coded systems. We will be sharing regular updates on this progress via the In Development page, Facebook and Twitter over the coming weeks. Sud Aviation Caravelle III 747 CLASSIC After many months of work, the mammoth job of modelling, texturing and the animation of the 747 Classic is nearly complete. The exterior and cockpit models are now finished, with painstaking detail right down to accurately modelled cabins with staircases (see development screenshot above), and hundreds of custom animations have been added. We recently shared some new preview images of the extensive virtual cockpit which features wear and tear based on a real-world aircraft, and we were pleased to see all of the great feedback and excitement for this iconic aircraft! Our coding team have been busy working on the huge array of avionics and systems functionality found onboard the aircraft, from the realistic exterior model animations to the engineer’s panel, and we will be providing more updates on each of these areas in the coming months. After receiving lots of feedback from the community, we are now working on additional variants to follow the 747 Classic, including the 747-300, VC-25 and E-4B. More news on those next time! 747 Classic TRAFFIC GLOBAL (EARLY ACCESS) We’ll be back in 2019 with many more improvements and enhancements to Traffic Global, including improved model lighting, more liveries and new features as we move towards a full release version in the early part of next year. In the meantime, for those of you who are already Traffic Global users we’ve opened a thread in the Early Access forum where you can request the liveries you’d most like to see added to the fleet. Please take a moment to add those you would like to see and we will endeavour to supply as many as possible in the new year. Traffic Global Early Access Here we are in the last month of 2018. Things have been a bit “Swan-like” here at Just Trains and although we have published and released several products such as the fantastic Valley Corridor route, ultra-urban detailed U-Bahn Frankfurt II tram system, super-authentic London-Aylesburyroute both in stand-alone form as well as the add-on version for the Chiltern Main Line, the unique German narrow-gauge Saxon IV-K steam locomotive and the essential UK Military Wagon packcarrying IFA’s, on the surface we may not appear to have been overly busy, the reality is that work on many projects has been happening. We announced two of these quite recently - the Ultimate Class 37 and the Midland Main Line - Sheffield-Derby route and more will be announced in the coming months. Software development of any kind has its challenges and all manner of things can and normally do affect the development times of projects such as a sim update breaking our code, feature creep where we want to add more features to make the project even more authentic, customer feedback and so on. These can add delays and this is one of the reasons why we try to never issue a release date until we're confident we can achieve the said date. We fully understand and really do appreciate your excitement and enthusiasm for our up-coming products but we want to ensure that when they are ready for release they really are ‘ready for release’. Your patience is as always greatly appreciated. Please read on for the latest news on the batch of products currently in development. LONDON UNDERGROUND S8 ADVANCED The much anticipated London Underground S8 Tube train is progressing very well now after a recent setback following the release of Train Simulator 2019 64bit version. Unfortunately this broke the code that we use that passes messages between the front and rear of the train such as the external destination boards, this meant that for instance you could set Harrow on the Hill in the TCMS in the cab and it would display that on the front external display but there would be no destination displayed on the rear of the train, so we had to update that code plus the code that we had already developed that worked previously. Externally and internally the models are all but complete. As an indication of the attention to detail affored to the S8, the real information displays use a LED type matrix system so that any message can be displayed. This posed a problem as there is no real font for this and so we needed to create a model matrix and then “illuminate” each of the required dots to form each letter and that meant the displays on the model would match the real-thing. We have not yet released a full set of specifications for the S8 as the systems coding is still ongoing but it should not be too long until we are able to do that. We are really proud of all of the work that has gone into the development of the S8 and are certainly looking forward to the release to allow you to enjoy a really authentic LU S8 experience. S8 Advanced WESTERN MAINLINES - CORNISH MAIN LINE EXTENSION Development of the Cornish Main Line has been on-going for some time but the finish line is seemingly in sight! This line is an extension of our Western Mainlines route and as such has to be integrated into the existing network that currently runs from London Paddington all the way down to Plymouth, as long as you have the Devon Main Line add-on installed. It has yet to be determined if Cornish Main Line will only be available as an add-on to Western Mainlines or also available as a stand-alone route. As Cornish Main Line is an add-on to Western Mainlines an updated version of Western Mainlines will be released at the same time as the Cornish Main Line . We have spent some time updating Western Mainlines to help increase the frame rate speeds, especially with the number of trees used, and this looks to have made a significant difference to performance. Cornish Main Line and the Western Mainlines update is due for release in early 2019. Cornish Main Line Extension ULTIMATE CLASS 37 We recently announced the Ultimate Class 37 and it now resides in the In Development section on the Just Trains website. This was originally in development with RailRight and we are now pleased to be progressing development by working with Vulcan Productions. As per the name, this will be the Ultimate Class 37 and will have sublime modelling and textures, both externally and in the cab, along with a custom sound set, super dynamics and an advanced set of custom-coded features. This is most certainly the one to watch! Ultimate Class 37 MIDLAND MAIN LINE - SHEFFIELD TO DERBY Sheffield to Derby is a 36-mile section of the Midland Main Line through the heart of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, serving the towns of Dore, Dronfield, Chesterfield, Belper and Duffield along the way. Development of the route, due to be released in 2019, is progressing very well with all the terrain, track and Super Elevation complete. Signalling is around 50% complete and the scenery work is about a third of the way complete. Building the many custom assets is about to get under way, and these include the Derby R.T.C and its associated sheds as well as Etches Park Depot and a number of the unique buildings around the stations at Sheffield. Needless to say, the stations and much else besides will be modelled specifically for this route. Midland Main Line - Sheffield to Derby LONDON - AYLESBURY UPDATE We have been working on a service pack/update for both the stand-alone and add-on for Chiltern Main Line versions of this route. Along with minor bugs fixes we have carried out work to increase the frame rates of the route along with enhancing the visual appearance. We removed extraneous objects such as houses that are not in view from the track and looked at visual enhancements too, for instance we have replaced the grass with a super new asset that really does look good. A main focus of the update is to prepare London-Aylesbury for the up-coming S8 release. Part of the London Underground Metropolitan Line runs besides and at some points on the very same rails as the London-Aylesbury route. The Met line section of the route is fully signalled and functional and we are now upgrading it to work with the S8. Part of this upgrade has involved very careful placement of the S8 stop chevrons and their invisible markers that are at each LU station. This means that when you correctly stop the S8, that must be in a very precise position, so driving skills ahoy! The S8 in-cab video screens will display (simulated) images of a platform. These are used in the real S8 to check that all is in order with the train before departure. One of the other route upgrades required for the S8 use is the development and placement of invisible markers that communicate with the S8 Radio display. The Met line has several radio centres along its route and the name of each radio centre is displayed on the radio and changes as the train moves along the route. We now have this simulated in the S8. The updated London-Aylesbury is due for release in early 2019. London - Aylesbury So that's it for this Development update. Hopefully you've found it useful and it's given you a good taster of what's to come in 2019. Remember you can visit the In Development sections of the Just Flight &Just Trains websites where new products are announced and screenshots and product details are added to the pages on a regular basis. 14. VSKYLABS, X-plane 11.30 and the Experimental Flight Model mode... Hello VSKYLABS user! This is an imporant notification for the upcoming X-Plane 11.30 VSKYLABS, X-Plane 11.30 AND THE EXPERIMENTAL FLIGHT MODEL MODE: X-Plane 11.30 will introduce the Experimental Fight Dynamics mode, which will allow to fly planes with the evolving 'next generation' X-Plane's flight dynamics model. The Experimental Flight Model mode will be optional, and users will have to select using it by enabling it through the General Settings menu in X-Plane. The Experimental Flight Model is, as its name is indicating, an experimental flight dynamics environment which will allow Laminar Research to develop X-Plane's next-generation flight dynamics model in the real-time environment of X-Plane. It will be developed and evaluated throughout several versions of X-Plane 11, right until it will get into a 'stable' state. It is prone to changes, therefore is not considered as *stable*. Meanwhile, while having it as an option for users to test in X-Plane 11.30+, it is allowing aircraft developers to evaluate and test their models extensively, mapping the needed changes and have them ready for the time in which the experimental flight model will become *stable*. The experimental flight model mode is available also in the current X-Plane 11.30 beta version. VSKYLABS has started to test and evaluate its projects with the experimental flight model mode, as preparation for things to come. The experimental flight model mode is prone to changes and updates and it is not considered as *stable*. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED NOT TO USE THE EXPERIMENTAL FLIGHT MODEL MODE ON A REGULAR BASIS, BUT ONLY FOR EVALUATION PURPOSE. In the meantime, bug-reports for this environment will not be addressed on the practical level. However, VSKYLABS aircraft users can report issues found in the experimental mode, using the VSKYLABS Bug/Issues report system (to be found in the VSKYLABS main webpage at https://www.vskylabs.com ). Having the VSKYLABS Projects to be designed and developed as native (default) X-Plane 11 add-ons, will assure a relatively simple adaptation process to the new flight dynamics model, when time is right. Actual transition of the flight dynamics models of the VSKYLABS projects to X-Plane's next-generation flight model environment will occur down the road, when Laminar Research will define the Experimental Flight Model as *stable*. 15. Following on from their award-winning PA-28R Arrow III, Hawk T1/A Advanced Trainer and C152, this highly detailed simulation of the Duchess Model 76 is being developed by Just Flight's in-house team following comprehensive, hands-on research with two real-life Duchess aircraft, G-BZRT and G-GCCL. The Duchess is a four-seater, twin-engine T-tail aircraft equipped with a retractable tricycle landing gear, and two 180hp four-cylinder engines fitted with constant-speed propellers. Its IFR-capable avionics suite, excellent handling characteristics and counter-rotating propellers make it an ideal aircraft for multi-engine flight training, and the perfect step up from single-engine aircraft such as the PA28. A cruise speed of 155 knots, a range of 780 nautical miles and a service ceiling of 20,000ft also make it a very capable touring aircraft. The Duchess is flown all around the world and our add-on reflects that global popularity. In addition to our UK research aircraft, G-BZRT and G-GCCL, the product will feature liveries from the USA, Canada, France, Australia and Germany .
