As of right now, the plan Orbx are considering is to release 2 different versions of the product: TrueEarth GB South LOD15 Summer Edition TrueEarth GB South LOD14 Seasons Edition Since it was announced that the planned intention of releasing TrueEarth Great Britain on Prepar3D without seasons, there has been a lot of community feedback regarding that decision. Because of the amount of data that would have to be distributed, it would’ve cost Orbx far more than the cost to the consumer to distribute such a large portion of data amongst the community. Understandably, this wouldn’t have been good business sense from the developer. However, John V took to the forums today to give a more detailed explanation into why this was the case and that the team has been discussing various options to both deliver for the community and also the business needs. The first thing John did was break down what comparing 5 regions would look like if they had all 5 seasons in the current LOD15 quality. TE Region Size in Sq Miles Size on Disk Netherlands 16040 72GB Great Britain 80823 360GB Washington 71362 320GB Oregon 98466 440GB California 163696 730GB TOTAL 2TB John said that by delivering 2TB of data to thousands of customers would “pretty much bankrupt Orbx” – nothing any of us would want to happen. It’s also worth remembering that Orbx allows for free, unlimited downloads for life, which again would add to the data distribution costs. As a result of wanting to listen to the community, but also protect the business, John put on the table a couple of options and want the community to comment on them (with constructive thoughts). Option 1 – Simply, to release TrueEarth Great Britain as it was intended. So with LOD15 (LOD15 is 1.2m per pixel*) resolution and summer seasons only. Orbx Trees will also work with TrueEarth, so seasonal trees will appear throughout depending on the time of year. Some previews of that are below. SPRING SUMMER FALL WINTER SPRING SUMMER Option 2 – Option 2 will compromise on some of the quality, but allow the team to create a seasonal texture package, and still be within reasonable file limits. Instead of LOD15 detail, Orbx would reduce to LOD14, but will include 5 seasons into the texture set. This would make it the same size as a LOD15 set overall. This is thanks to how P3D can compress BGL images. Below, you can see the difference between LOD15 vs LOD14. John said in his post that the differences are discernible at 500ft, but at a usual VFR altitude of 2,500ft, it’s hard to tell. LOD15 LOD14 As of right now, the plan Orbx are considering is to release 2 different versions of the product: TrueEarth GB South LOD15 Summer Edition TrueEarth GB South LOD14 Seasons Edition Both will be the same price, but Orbx will offer the 40% cross-grade discount between the two. The plan is people can decide which is more important to them as a simmer, and either choose to install one or both – switching them on/off as required. As mentioned at the beginning, Orbx are keen to get your feedback on this, so please head to the forums and give them your constructive thoughts. Orbx seem to be on a preview run with TrueEarth Great Britain South for P3D right now as two new preview threads showcasing the product were created over the past couple of days. Both threads were created by screenshot-extraordinaire Iain Emms and cover various parts of land TrueEarth GB South will cover. The screenshots below include parts of Wales and other scattered areas across the South of England. In one forum thread, both Ed and John from Orbx confirmed that TrueEarth GB for P3D will not feature seasonal texture variation. The reasons include that it would hugely increase the amount of data you would need to download (around 250GB), additional development time and further imagery data. As a result, only Summer textures will be included with the release of TrueEarth Great Britain South, which was unlike TrueEarth Netherlands which included 5 season textures. Hi all! I spent the better part of the day wondering whether or not I would write this op-ed, and spent the best part of my day wondering about all the reasons why TerraMaxx's new piece of software is not the way things should be. I think the biggest reason behind my rationale is that winter textures in a flight simulator such as X-Plane 11 shouldn't come from a third-party add-on company. This feature should have been included a long time ago in X-Plane and we can only blame Laminar Research for this. However, I'm hopeful that this will be included in a future release of X-Plane. In the time being, anything that comes from a third-party add-on company such as TerraMaxx is a patch for a problem that is bigger than them. It is a quick fix to a problem that needs more attention to details... Which brings me to my second point... The pictures look amazing, well... sorta. The textures themselves don't feel natural. It's a layer that is applied on top of the whole world where snow should be seen during winter. Let's just say the pictures are very impressive as we never had snow in X-Plane before. But we already had snow in X-Plane before, freeware patches - again, patches. The novelty in this add-on is the fact that textures will auto-change with seasons and from one place to another. What happens is that mid-flight, your textures will re-load as many times as you cross that imaginary line where TerraMaxx feels there should be snow. This doesn't feel natural, this is not how things should be in a simulator like X-Plane! We shouldn't have to buy seasons... Seasons should be a natural occurrence in the sim and should come from Laminar Research and enhance, yes, if needs would arise from there. But that, that's my two cents and I don't hold any grudge for the 99.9% of you's who will make that purchase, after all, that's a good fix for now. TerraMaxx is here! Seasons have finally come to X-Plane 11, and we're excited about it! TerraMaxx automatically adjusts seasons, has high resolution trees, and integrates superbly with X-Plane 11 TerraMaxx[TM 1.0] TerraMaxx - Seasons for X-Plane 11! After years of development and a close working relationship with Laminar Research, we bring you the first product to properly bring seasons to X-Plane!Maxx-XP, in co-operation with Sundog Software, and X-Aviation are excited to bring you another game changing experience in immersion with TerraMaxx.Quick Facts: Automatic season changes based on a variety of parameters, date and time of year as well as location. Fantastic performance, much like you'd expect with default X-Plane's scenery system when it comes to FPS. X-Plane 11 only.Developer: Maxx-XPDownload Size: 6GBInstalled Size: 12GBHow TerraMaxx worksTerraMaxx is a plugin that will monitor a variety of factors as you fly and create a plausible season around that information. You have the option to manually select a season set, but you can also have TerraMaxx run automatically and change seasons for you. Additionally, as you fly across different regions of the world, seasonal textures will change accordingly if appropriate for that time of year. For example, let's say you fly from sunny Florida to snowy Colorado. If the time of year is appropriate, TerraMaxx will create a plausible situation where as you depart Florida it's going to be in a dry, summer-like season, and as you land in Colorado you'll find snow on the ground, in the trees, and other surrounding areas. Will TerraMaxx work with custom airports?Airports will continue to work in X-Plane and with TerraMaxx as they always have, but TerraMaxx will not apply seasonal effects to existing custom scenery packages. This means the airport will load just fine on top of a TerraMaxx season, but objects from the scenery will not have, for example, snow on them unless the scenery developer integrates their package fully with TerraMaxx. However, within the documentation that ships with TerraMaxx, scenery designers will find information about integrating their airports and surrounding scenery with TerraMaxx in an even more immersive way if they so choose (not mandatory, airports and TerraMaxx will load side-by-side together just fine). With the steps followed in the documentation, scenery designers could then have buildings that have snow on them in the winter, or different colored grass during autumn, etc! Will TerraMaxx work with orthophoto scenery? At the time of release TerraMaxx does not support changing seasons for orthophoto sceneries (like ortho4xp). We will re-visit this soon to evaluate what we can do to integrate these types of sceneries, if at all. That said, in the winter with snow everywhere it may be just as easy to disable any of your orthophoto sceneries and let TerraMaxx run the beautiful winter scenes during this particular time of year. Will TerraMaxx work with HD Mesh Scenery v4?Yes, TerraMaxx will fully work with this fantastic scenery produced by Andras (alpilotx). How smooth is the season transition, like from snowy winter textures to dry summer textures? As you approach the boundaries where textures should plausibly change, proper textures will begin to re-load for that region. This does mean you can have a small pause as the textures come in (TerraMaxx will display in the lower left corner that it is loading in new seasonal textures), and once X-Plane is done loading the scenery all is as it should be. Keep in mind that regions of snow conditions are typically quite large (numerous states), so this does NOT mean as you cross DSF scenery tiles that things are constantly re-loading. We have also talked to Laminar about ways to smooth out the pause, and while we have some positive discussion there, we are again going to wait to see how much support from the community is given to this project before we potentially venture down that path more. Additionally, the auto texture changing is OPTIONAL. You do not have to have this, and you can force a single season as you wish, no matter the location. Highlighted Features • Automatic swapping of X-Plane’s default scenery with seasonal representations of summer, autumn, mild winter, and deep winter based on your simulated location, date, and temperature • Replacement tree textures with 4X the resolution of default and seasonal variations • Optional post-processing effects to give autumn and winter scenes season- appropriate hues • If you indicated that your GPU has more than 5GB of VRAM when installing, high-resolution normal maps for default scenery will be installed, to give the appearance of more depth to the terrain. You can easily switch between the normal map option by re-opening the installer.Compatible With • X-Plane 11 • Mac & Windows. No Linux. Why should you get it?TerraMaxx is pretty exciting, we think. Not only is it the start to total seasons automation with beautiful scenes and high quality trees, but right away we're allowing third party scenery developers to also take advantage of this technology. As time progresses we hope to also advance TerraMaxx into a product you'll want to keep installed on your computer for good! Captains, Over the years we have released SkyMaxx Pro, Real Weather Connector, SoundMaxx, and MaxxFX. The community support throughout the release cycle of these products has been nothing short of fantastic, and we have listened to requests from many of you over that time. Today, we are really excited to officially announce TerraMaxx! TerraMaxx will bring you seasons in X-Plane, and it does it without you ever having to leave the simulator, or even having to manually switch out season sets! There are settings in the plug-in menu if you desire to force a season to show, but the product has it's own algorithm on when to show seasonal textures based on location, time of year, and your current flying position (meaning it can also change during the flight). The proper feature list is as follows: Automatic swapping of X-Plane’s default scenery with seasonal representations of summer, autumn, mild winter, and deep winter based on your simulated location, date, and temperature Replacement tree textures with 4X the resolution of default and seasonal variations Optional post-processing effects to give autumn and winter scenes season- appropriate hues If you indicated that your GPU has more than 5GB of VRAM when installing, high-resolution normal maps for default scenery will be installed, to give the appearance of more depth to the terrain. You can easily switch between the normal map option with the installer.
